Initially classified as “Deuxi\u00e8me Grand Cru Class\u00e9” in 1855, Mouton was promoted to the rank of Premier Grand Cru Class\u00e9” in 1973 by the French Ministry of Agriculture.
Until 1924 Mouton Rothschild wine left the Ch\u00e2teau in barrels. Merchants, who bought most of the harvest, took care of the rest until reaching the final product: storage, bottling, labeling and sale. With no direct control over the end result, the producer had little interest in the appearance of the label. The design was left entirely to the merchant. In 1924, Ch\u00e2teau Mouton Rothschild instituted a revolutionary practice: the vintage was entirely bottled on site. It was the birth of the famous ‘mise en bouteilles au ch\u00e2teau’ (bottled in the ch\u00e2teau), a procedure that was soon adopted by the other great wines of Bordeaux, thus leaving behind the “Deuxi\u00e8me Grand Cru Class\u00e9” classification of 1855.
One of the consequences of this procedure was that the producer became directly responsible for the final quality of the product to the consumer. The labels, then, gained a new function: they became the birth certificate of each bottle. To draw attention to this fact, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, a legendary figure in the wine world, called on Cubist designer Jean Carlu to create an original label for the 1924 vintage. In the following years, the label underwent numerous modifications until 1945, end of the Second World War. Upon returning from the battlefields, Baron Philippe had the idea of, each year, handing over the design of the label to a contemporary artist, who would illustrate it with an original work.<\/p>\n
