The second generation of the Niepoort family, at the end of the 19th century, had the happy idea of purchasing from a German glassmaker in Oldenburg about 4000 blown demijohns, made of dark green glass, with varying capacities between 8 and 11 litres, which we now call \u201cdemijohns\u201d. Eduard Karel Jacob van der Niepoort died early and it was his son, Eduard Marius van der Niepoort, Dirk’s grandfather, who gave the destination to the \u201cdemijohns\u201d, having bottled the best wines from the 1931 harvest, and thus created the type \u201cGarrafeira Niepoort \u201d. Since the distant year of 1931 until today, maturation in the \u201cdemijohns\u201d sealed with a cork stopper has been closely monitored, being an almost \u201csacred\u201d ritual for the Niepoort and Nogueira families. Niepoort is currently the only producer of the \u201cGarrafeira\u201d style of port wine. The \u201cGarrafeira\u201d style combines the aromas of aging in barrels with the finesse and elegance provided by aging in the bottle.<\/p>\n
Niepoort Garrafeira 1940 is a very elegant and complex wine with an amber hue and a greenish edge. Perfumed aroma of citrus fruits, crystallized fruits, honey and beeswax, nougat, light rancid.
